Upper Mustang Trek was opened in 1992 for primary trekking to
limited number of trekkers in order to protect its fragile environment and ancient
Tibetan culture, different to others. Mustang trek unveils the incredible
beauty of forbidden kingdom, its barren and arid valleys, eroded canyon and
colorful settlements festooned with stone and brick houses on the back-drop of
majestic Himalaya range of Nilgiri, Tukche, Annapurna and Dhaulagiri.
Located north-west of the Annapurna region extending to the
Tibetan plateau, Upper Mustang is a large and remote mountain-fringed basin
home to the headwater of the Kali Gandaki. Upper Mustang Trek is well-known as
great monsoon trek in Nepal as the entire region lies in rain-shadow area,
sheltered by Annapurna and Dhaulagiri massifs. Trekking to Upper Mustang offers
the great alpine scenario similar to Tibetan Plateau, with tree-less
landscapes, rocky trails and majestic views of Annapurna, Dhaulagiri and other
Himalaya rage.
This semi-autonomous and Tibetan influenced region was
described as fascinatingly ugly country by Tillman, for being little explored;
indeed – trekking to Upper Mustang (Lo Manthang) is through dry and parched
landscapes, steep trail with deep insight of culture and mountain views.
Lo-Manthang, the heart of Mustang is a walled city once ruled by religious
king. At Lo-Manthang, you will be surrounded by more than 35 mountains over
6,000m. The trail elevation rises from 2,815m to 3,780m above sea level.
